In NYC, to discard an air conditioner, you must make an appointment with the Department of Sanitation (DSNY) to have the chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) refrigerant removed. You will need to schedule a CFC removal appointment and place the air conditioner curbside on your designated collection day.DSNY will then remove the CFC and tag the appliance for recycling.
